Abstract

The mechanism of nerve regeneration and the optimal time for neurorrhaphy is still controversial. Many authors agree on the presence of neurotropic factors but the real mechanism of peripheral nerve repair is still unknown. We tried to know the
optimal
time for neurorrhaphy by comparing the recovery of muscle and nerve with time sequence of neurorrhaphy.
Fifty six New Zealand rabbits were divided into 4 groups. In group 1, nerve repair was done immediately after nerve transection and in group 2, nerve repair was done one week after nerve transection and in group 3, repair was done two weeks later
and in
group 4 four weeks after nerve injury. Injured nerve was motor branch to extensor digitorum longus.
Negative area in compound muscle action potential, muscle wet weight and myelinated axon counts in repaired nerve were measured in each groups at 4 weeks after neurorrhaphy. Negative area was significantly increased in group 3(p<0.01) and muscle
wet
weight was also increased in group 3. Myelinated axons were counted in each group and the count was increased in group 3 compared to others (p<0.05). We think that further research on the reason of these changes can contribute to the future
understanding of nerve physiology.
